FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If your question isn’t answered here, please call us at 970-319-0656 and we can help!

Q: What do I bring?

A: Water, shoes for walking or hiking, sunscreen, clothes for hiking (bringing multiple layers is good), and snacks or lunch (particularly for longer outings). Pretty much everywhere we go we can hike in sturdy sandals but running/walking/tennis shoes are preferred. Wear hiking boots if that’s what you’re comfortable with.

Q: Are shorts okay?

A: Yes, although pants may offer better protection from abrasion on the rock.

Q: What if I’m afraid of heights?

A: That’s okay, plenty of climbers are afraid of heights. We can also help tailor build a climbing outing to help tackle your fears or ease them.

Q: Is it safe?

A: As with an adventure sport there are inherent risks and dangers and climbing is no different. All guides are highly experienced and are trained and/or certified by America’s leading body for the instruction and certification of climbing guides, the American Mountain Guide Association.

Q: What if it rains?

A: We can climb at some areas in light rain or even heavy rain. If we need to we can postpone a trip and reschedule. If we can’t reschedule a trip, you can get a full refund.

Q: Is there an age limit?

A: No, although generally kids should be about 4 years old to properly fit into the harness. The size of the person and the weight of the kid are the most important factors.

Q: Is there a weight limit or minimum?

A: Yes and no. The size of a person is more important than the weight. The kids’ harnesses fit a 13 to 23 inch waist and a 14 to 17 inch torso (length). They have a maximum weight of 40kg (88 pounds). If a kid is too big for the kids harness then they wear an adult harness. Our adult harnesses are marketed as “one size fits all” and they fit a really wide size range. The waist belt fits waists from 20 inches to 37 inches (52-95 cm) and the leg loops fit legs from 14 inches to 25 inches (35-65 cm). There is no manufacturer’s listed maximum weight so as long as a person can fit into the harness properly, then they are okay to go. It’s perhaps important to note that people in the 300+ pound range have and do go climbing with no additional safety concerns. We have had NFL lineman go climbing and be just as safe as anyone else and have a great time.

Q: What if I just had back surgery?

A: As part of our registration process we ask that you answer faithfully to a few brief questions about your medical history. It’s important for you to be honest and consider if your doctor would be okay with you participating in a climbing activity. If at any time one of our guides feel like you are not physically or mentally capable of safely taking part in the activity they can use their discretion to stop the activity.

Q: What if I can already climb 5.10 or. 5.11?

A: Great, there are plenty of hard, challenging climbs that we can introduce to you and we’re excited to help further develop your skills so you can hit that 5.12 milestone or whatever goal you have in mind.

Q: What if I don’t know what 5.10 or 5.11 means?

A: That’s fine, it probably just means you haven’t climbed before or haven’t been educated about the climbing difficulty rating system. We are happy to teach you what it means when you are out on your climbing trip.

Q: Do I need prior climbing experience?

A: No, we love first time climbers as well as climbers with years of experience.

Q: What if who I am climbing with can only climb really easy routes and I want to climb really hard routes? Is there something for all of us?

A: Yes. One of the great things about climbing is that there are climbs for a wide range of abilities and experiences at the same area. At all of the areas we guide there are great, easy beginner climbs within close proximity to hard, challenging climbs that include some of the hardest in America. For example, at one popular area there is an easy 5.6 five feet away from a challenging and hard 5.11. Hence, everyone of all abilities can have a great experience at the same time.
